The Story Behind Gaga's Tattoo on This Record

Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga – Love For Sale

Somewhere in the middle of this Cole Porter tribute, Lady Gaga sings a line that isn't quite the original - and it's about the tattoo on her own arm.

The lyric that changed

On "I've Got You Under My Skin," Gaga makes a small but personal edit, singing "like a tattoo under my skin" instead of the original line. Bennett responds with delighted laughter. Gaga has a tattoo on her arm of a sketch Bennett made of Miles Davis' trumpet, so the line is a quiet nod to their friendship, hidden right inside a jazz standard.

A tribute to Cole Porter

Love for Sale is Bennett and Gaga's second and final album together, following Cheek to Cheek in 2014. Every song is written by Cole Porter, and the whole record is a tribute to him. It was recorded between 2018 and early 2020 at Electric Lady Studios in New York, with sessions delayed by Gaga's other projects and the pandemic.

How their partnership began

Bennett and Gaga first met in 2011 at the Robin Hood Foundation gala in New York. He later asked her to duet with him on "The Lady Is a Tramp" for his album Duets II. The day Cheek to Cheek came out in 2014, Bennett called Gaga and asked if she wanted to make a second album together, this time built around Porter's songs - an invitation she said she was honoured to accept.

Bennett's last album

Love for Sale became Bennett's final studio album, following his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2016, and the sixty-first of his career. The duo marked the occasion with two farewell concerts at Radio City Music Hall in August 2021, filmed as One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, before Bennett stepped away from performing live.
