The coverThe Story Behind Dancing With The Devil's Many Covers
Demi Lovato's seventh album arrived in more than one disguise. This record shipped with multiple exclusive covers, each tied to its own story.
A Companion To The Documentary
Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over was released on April 2, 2021, by Island Records. It followed Lovato's 2018 hospitalization and was recorded alongside a YouTube Originals docu-series of the same name, tracing her recovery and self-discovery.
Why So Many Covers
Multiple versions of the album were made available to pre-order, including alternate artworks, bundles, and a Target-exclusive edition with bonus tracks. There were three variations for direct-to-consumer versions sold through Lovato's own website, plus a UK-exclusive cover and the separate Target cover in the United States.
The UK editions all carried an additional bonus track, while the Target version added two extra tracks alongside its different cover. A bundle was also offered featuring all three exclusive covers together with either the UK-specific cover or the standard edition.
Cassette Variations Too
The exclusive artwork extended beyond CD and vinyl formats. Multiple cassette variations were offered for preorder through Lovato's website, with all three alternate covers getting their own UK-exclusive cassette versions. The American cassette release, by contrast, used the standard edition cover art.
The Photographer Behind It All
Across every variant, the album artwork was shot by American photographer Dana Trippe, giving the different editions a consistent visual hand even as the covers themselves changed from version to version.
